Art Philosophy / Who we are
Brevard Little Theatre was founded in 1935 by Beulah Zachary, a Brevard schoolteacher who later became the first executive director of an early children's TV show, "Kukla, Fran and Ollie." Its operations were suspended during World War II and restarted in 1950 under the leadership of Robroy Farquhar, the founder of Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theater of North Carolina. Robroy served as BLT's resident director during the first decade of the group's reestablishment.
BLT is an all-volunteer community organization. It features a Youth Troupe for children and teens; and "BLT-To-Go," a road show providing on-site entertainment programs for meetings, luncheons, dinners, and parties in Transylvania and adjoining counties.
From its new home in the American Legion Hall in Brevard (55 E. Jordan St), BLT stages seven regular productions per season plus additional, special presentations. The regular season runs January thru December; season tickets are available year-round.
BLT also conducts an annual New-Play Competition each year that has attracted as many as 283 plays from 38 states and 5 foreign countries. The winning plays (full-length, one-act, and short) are staged by BLT, and the winning playwrights are honored at an awards luncheon.
For details about all this and more, visit BLT's extensive and continuously-updated website, which was selected as one of Citcom's "Featured Websites" and called "a treasure trove of historical information."
BLT is open to all who wish to participate; we invite you to join us onstage, backstage or in an offstage support capacity. “Get into the Act”—you'll enjoy it!
