NUMBER 7 ARTS EXHIBIT AT TC ARTS COUNCIL-May 13-June10; Brevard. 828-884-2787
The Transylvania Community Arts Council has announced
their newest exhibit, Number 7 Arts at TC Arts. Artwork in this exhibit
is by members of the Number 7 Fine Arts and Crafts Cooperative located on Main
Street. The exhibit will be on display at the TC Arts Council thru June 10. A
reception to meet the artists will be held on May 24 for Brevard’s 4th
Friday Gallery Walk from 5 – 9 pm.
The exhibit features works of art by Sonia Arnold –
jewelry, Joseph Basting – metal, Bonne Jean Bertlshofer – basketry, Louis
Bishop – pastels, Marcia Brennan – paper mache, Elda Brown – jewelry, Joe
Bruneau – basketry, Adrienne Casteen – jewelry, John Davis – oil, Gwen Flinn –
Acrylic, Sharyn Fogel – watercolor, Sue Grier – clay, Freddie Hart – copper
enamel, Barbara Hawk – oil, Rose Haynes – colored pencil, Erin Keane –
encaustic, Suzie Knapp – basketry, Joy McGill – fiber, Nancy Rosenthal – clay
and Ellen Stinchcomb - acrylic.
The
TC Arts Council is located at 349 S. Caldwell Street in Brevard. The gallery

4th FRIDAY GALLERY WALK KICKS OFF WHITE SQUIRREL FESTIVAL-May 24; 5-9pm. Downtown Brevard. 828.884-2787
It's time again to get your white squirrel on! This
year's May Gallery Walk and the White Squirrel Festival coincide. Scurry
on down to Hunters & Gatherers on Friday,
May 24 during gallery walk from 5-9 pm to start your celebration. Their
featured artist is Brian Gaffney who creates bark-edged and mountain-inspired rustic
furniture. Their musical guests are Brandilyn Davidson and Eric
Congdon. The drink concoction for the night is humbly suggested by the
holiday, White Squirrelly Punchy Punch.
Over at the Transylvania
Community Arts Council check out their newest exhibit for the gallery walk, Number

Gallery Walk night
means it’s time for Friday Night Live at Red Wolf Gallery. They will
feature the work of ceramic artist and sculptor Barry Greg. He is known for his
unique pieces that present a great prospective in clay. Music for the evening
will be provided by the renowned Bradford Carson. Please drop by for
refreshments and view the other artists.
Next door to Red Wolf is the
gallery of Number 7 Fine Arts & Crafts Cooperative. Not only will they have
artists at TC Arts Council they will also have artists at their downtown
gallery for gallery walk. Enjoy artwork by over 25 local artists.
Don’t miss the
Transylvania Art Guild’s show in the Old Grover’s Storefront window on Main
Street. The Guild has a beautiful display of artwork in the window
- all are originals done by local artists who are members of the Art Guild –
watercolors, oils, pastels, pencils, block printing, acrylics and
collage. The paintings are for sale and members will be on site during
the gallery walk to welcome the walkers, answer questions, and arrange for them
to purchase a painting.
Local Color has many great
new things to share. There are lots of new artists in their shop to check
out. New photography by Dave Allen and Dan Bennett, colorful painted
signs, fabulous fiber arts, recycled bicycle part jewelry and sculptures, "Hillbilly Art
Lamps", functional steam-punk switch plates, recycled glass
chimes, funky painted shoes, and so much more. They donate 10%
of Gallery Walk sales to the TC Arts Council. Stop by and say hi to Paul and
Pauline!
Down at the Transylvania Heritage
Museum enjoy music by Celtic Conspiracy from 5:30 -6:30 pm. There will be
refreshments and a sneak peek at the Museum's new exhibit, which opens on May
25 called “A River Runs Through It: Explore Transylvania's Waterways."
They also have great parking for the evening.
Main Street Ltd. will host a
free wine tasting from 5-7 pm during the May 24 Gallery Walk. Jaynelle Payne
from Mutual Distributing will be pouring. Featuring great wines at discount
pricing. Next door in The Hollingsworth Gallery (in between Quotations and Main
St. Ltd.) enjoy the photography of Sue Hershey and Bruce
Siulinski. Siulinski is exhibiting several photos of wildlife of Western
North Carolina. Hershey’s work showcases many point-of-view images
of her WNC surroundings.
New this year is the Andrea
Brewer Art Studio above the Proper Pot on Main Street. She will be serving
refreshments and presenting her new fiber work. Check out the new gift item for
May - Kindle holders.
D.D. Bullwinkel's will be open
during gallery walk until 9 pm. Moose Tracks will be open also. They will
have beer, wine and refreshments. Brevard Brewing Company will have the band Letters
to Abigail playing at 8 pm. Their seasonal beer will be the Red Ale.
The White Squirrel Shoppe will
feature author Judy Pierce on May 24 for the downtown Gallery Walk. After
earning her master’s degree from the School of Journalism at Southern Illinois
University, Pierce moved to the Southeast and taught mass communication courses
at the University level. She also taught adult education classes on using herbs
both in adult education programs and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in
Brasstown, NC. Her children’s book Tales From Farlandia: Ozettes
Destiny was written after she had been writing short stories about a white
squirrel named Ozette. After much urging, her friends convinced her she
should write a book about the lovable and adventurous white squirrel. Ozette’s
Destiny was published this spring by Pants on Fire Press. She is a
member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. The White
Squirrel Shoppe will also host the musical group Six Chic’s & a Dude from
the Transylvania Youth Strings O’Connor Method Program. They will also be
serving their signature drink Mimosa’s.

Street will have the musical group Blue Rags performing from 8 pm –11:45 pm.
Cost is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Summer Jazz Concert Series at The Phoenix, the best venue for live music in

DeCristofaro, Jamie Warren, Cameron Austin and Bill Berg). Every other
Wednesday will feature over 20 of Western North Carolina's finest jazz

recognized pianist and composer Michael Jefry Stevens
will be performing his original music with vibraphonist Jason DeCristofaro and

June 19 - Frank Southecorvo Quartet - Frank is a tenor
saxophonist/composer/arranger based out of Asheville whose soulful music is as
influenced by R&B and Soul as it is the great canon of instrumental
jazz.
June 26 - Michael Jefry Stevens Trio returns to The Phoenix!
July 3 - The Phoenix House Quartet and Jazz Jam
July 10 - Tyler Kittle Quartet - Tyler is a virtuosic
saxophonist who brings a fire and intensity to every style of jazz he plays -
everything from hard bop to funk this night.
July 17 - Whitney Moore Quartet - Whitney Moore is a Jazz/Latin/Soul vocalist
whose smooth, beautiful voice will warm your heart and lift your spirits.
She will be singing everything from Latin cumbias and boleros to beautiful jazz
ballads.
July 24 - Bill Bares Quartet - William Bares is a
professor of music at UNCA and accomplished jazz pianist, who will be joining
Jason DeCristofaro, Zack Page of One Leg Up and Michael W. Davis of the
Broadcast for an evening of high energy hard bop.
July 31 - Nelson Dougherty Quartet - guitarist/composer
and BC grad Nelson Dougherty will be performing an evening of music by Wayne
Shorter, Paul Motian, Thelonious Monk and other jazz greats, as well as his own
innovative and exciting musical compositions.
August 7 - The Phoenix House Quartet and Jazz Jam

14 - Tim Winter Trio - Tim Winter is an exceptionally gifted electric bassist
