Christine Kosiba, former Brevard resident, and the artist responsible for four of downtown Brevard's outdoor wildlife sculptures, will be back in the area to teach pottery workshops at the Carwile-Dodson Studio for Pottery Instruction this winter. Kosiba, who created sculptures of ravens, the red fox and the sculpture project's most recent additions, the wild turkey and chipmunks, will teach two-day workshops on both wildlife sculpture and creating personal totems. The workshops, which are intended for persons of all experience levels, will cost $150 each.
Creating Totems will be offered on Sunday, April 11 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm and Saturday, April 24 from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm am - noon. During the first session, Kosiba will talk about the meanings of totem poles, which are as varied as the cultures which make them. She will present a slide show illustrating how indigenous peoples have used totems for centuries to celebrate cultural beliefs, recount familiar legends and tell stories, represent clan/family lineages or notable events, as well as a means of artistic expression. Students will learn hand-building basics to create their own totem components. The second day of the workshop will focus on surface treatments for the totems and mounting. The finished totems will be mounted on a metal rod fastened in concrete for indoor or outdoor display.
Kosiba currently lives in Blacksburg, VA with husband Mark Lane and daughter, Ana. Christine and Mark not only harbor a deep appreciation for nature, they support both local and general wildlife rehabilitation and conservation efforts.
