Gallery Exhibit: The Far Side: Fantasy, Far Fetched and Fun! - by Transylvania Community Arts Council

The Transylvania Community Arts Council just announced its newest exhibit entitled: The Far Side - Fantasy, Far Fetched & Fun, which will be on display now thru October 1. The TC Arts gallery is open Monday – Friday from 10 am – 4 pm. The public is invited to an artist reception on Friday, September 24 from 5-9 pm as part of Brevard’s 4th Friday Gallery Walk. Tammy Hopkins, executive director of the TC Arts Council says, “We are excited to explore the far side of art. This show will be different from anything we have ever done.” Work on display in this exhibit includes collages by Mark Carter that took a year to create. Mark is a well-known artist from Pisgah Forest, check out his website at www.markcartersart.com. On the fantasy side we have digital artwork by author Scott Clark of Brevard whose novel Parallel Earth is due out next Spring. To learn more about Scott go to www.scottclarkvision.com. For those who love pottery check out the fun clay designs by Sue Grier. If you are into wacky and weird, then check out Gayle Houk’s creations using old doll parts and old metal and wood stools. Artists on display at the TC Arts Council includes: Donna Allstaedt, Marcia Brennan, Andrea Knott Brewer, Joe Bruneau, Mark Carter, Scott Clark, Jack Day, Liz Gillentine, Sue Grier, Gregg Henninger, Gayle Houk, Nilsa Lobdell, Bill Sander, Ellen Riching Stinchcomb, and Kathleen Voltz. During the reception to be held at TC Arts on Friday, September 24 enjoy music provided by local artist and musician Gregg Henninger. Also on display during the gallery walk will be the artwork created in the TC Arts Writing As Art Workshops that were led by Wayne Drumheller. The TC Arts Council is located at 349 S. Personalized Planters with Mary Murray - by Carwile-Dodson Studio for Pottery Instruction

Personalized Planters with Mary Murray September 7 - October 1 (4 weeks). 6 - 9 p.m. (Tue. -instruction / Fri. -practice). This is a great class for plant enthusiasts who want to create personalized planters out of low fire earthenware clay, which is known for its ability to both wick and store excess water. Students will be taught how to construct specialty planters for orchids, bonsai trees and herbs. They also will learn how to make and apply terra-sigillata as a surface treatment. All experience levels welcome.

Writing As Art Workshop - by Transylvania Community Arts Council

September 7 & 14 Writing As Art Workshop with Wayne Drumheller The Transylvania Community Arts Council will team with Wayne Drumheller, local writer, photographer and storyteller, to offer local writers a new workshop opportunity called Writing As Art, which will be presented at the TC Arts Council on September 7 from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm and again on September 14 from - 10 am - 11:30 am & 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm. Cost for these three workshops will be a $10 donation to TC Arts Council. This is an introductory workshop for both novice and mature artisans who are willing to take a fresh look at a fresh learning experience. Participants will learn how writing and art forms can be combined for display as a result of this digital learning workshop. They will get a complete demonstration of Story Book Creator Software in producing and printing single page writing with art and photography, books and more. Each participant will be helped to design and produce an art form for display at the Arts Council during the 4th Friday Gallery Walk on September 24th from 5:00 -9:00 pm. Leading the workshops will be Wayne Drumheller who received his Bachelor Degree from California State University at Sonoma and his Master of Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He recently was elected to the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Writers Network and is an avid writer and reader in Western North Carolina writers’ groups. For the last three years, Wayne has combined his photography and journaling interests into writing and publishing his family memoirs. Through free workshops he has helped others organize; write personal memoirs and legacy heritage books. To date, he has written and helped produced over 60 personal memoirs and heritage books containing photographs, writing, poetry and verse for family, friends and associates. Wayne and his wife, Linda, and their chocolate lab “Brownie” reside on Round Mountain just west of Brevard, NC. They are active adventure hikers, fitness and race walkers, gardeners, travelers and photographer/artist team. Workshops will be held at the TC Arts Council building located at 349 S. Independent Study with Rick Compton September 12- October 21 This course is open to former Carwile-Dodson Studio students who have completed a six-week or three-week course with instructor approval. This is a non-instructional studio time for experienced students to continue creating with clay. Students participating in the Independent Study Studio Time will be allowed to use the studio two days a week. Thursdays from 6 - 9 p.m., and Sundays from 2-6 p.m.

Introduction to Wheel-Throwing with John Dodson September 13 - October 20 (6 weeks). 6 – 9 p.m. (Mon. -instruction / Wed. -practice). Students will learn about the properties of clay and about beginning wheel-throwing techniques. They will learn how to transform basic cylinders into bowls, vases and cups. Pulling and attaching handles also will be discussed. Glazing basics will be taught and students will glaze their own work. All experience levels welcome.
